Construction and Maintenance Updates

The latest updates on current SMART projects can be found on this page.

Overnight Track Maintenance Work Beginning July 20

SMART will begin overnight track maintenance as part of its 2026 Surfacing Project on July 20, 2026. Major track surfacing is a routine part of railroad maintenance and is typically performed every two years to maintain proper track alignment and ride quality.

Work Location

The work will begin in Larkspur and progress north along SMART’s passenger rail corridor to the SMART Airport station.  The recently opened Windsor extension is not included in this project, as that section of track is new and does not yet require surfacing.

Schedule

Work will primarily take place overnight, after the last scheduled train each day, and is expected to continue for approximately three weeks, including weekends. The schedule may change due to weather, operational needs, or other unforeseen circumstances.

Impacts

Residents and businesses near the rail corridor may notice intermittent nighttime construction activity, including heavy construction equipment, mechanical noise, lights, backup alarms, ballast work, test train movements, train bells, and occasional train horn use as required by railroad operating rules. SMART will make every effort to minimize noise and disruption while safely completing this important maintenance.

Temporary Pathway Closures

For the safety of the public and work crews, pathway segments adjacent to active track maintenance work will be temporarily closed during overnight work hours. Closures are expected to occur on weekdays from approximately 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. and on weekends from approximately 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Pathway access will be restored each morning once work has been completed.

Traffic impacts or road closures are not anticipated, as the work will take place within SMART’s right-of-way.

SMART appreciates the community's patience and understanding as we complete this important maintenance to ensure the continued safety, comfort, and reliability of rail service.

Geyserville station

SMART is working to complete the passenger rail and pathway system approved by North Bay voters in 2008, connecting Cloverdale and Larkspur. As part of that effort, the agency is evaluating a proposed station in Geyserville while advancing the final northern extension of passenger rail service to Cloverdale. Community input will help determine whether a station should be included in Geyserville and where it should be located.

Healdsburg station

SMART is extending its regional passenger rail and pathway system service northward from Windsor to Healdsburg.

The project will add roughly nine miles of track, construct a new SMART station in Healdsburg, and extend the SMART multi-use pathway for active transportation along the rail corridor.

Critical infrastructure upgrades—including improved grade crossings, bridge rehabilitation/replacement, modern signaling, and safety systems—are part of the project.

A design contract was awarded in 2025 and passenger service is planned to start by late 2028.

The extension is funded through a combination of federal, state, regional, and local grants, reflecting strong support for expanding sustainable transportation, reducing congestion, and enhancing regional connectivity.
