On Sunday, April 12, 2026, transit service across Marin and Sonoma counties will become more connected, frequent, and convenient.
As part of the Marin-Sonoma Coordinated Transit Service (MASCOTS) Plan, nine regional transit agencies have worked together to better align schedules, improve transfers, and expand service along the Highway 101 corridor, making it easier to travel throughout the North Bay and into San Francisco.
What this means for SMART riders:
SMART service is increasing by 19%, with more trains running earlier in the morning, more often during the day, and later into the evening. These improvements are designed to give you more flexibility; whether you're commuting, running errands, or heading out for the evening.
You’ll see:
- Earlier morning trains for early commutes
- New midday service to fill gaps in the schedule
- More evening options for getting home or going out
- Improved connections with local bus service
- More frequent service overall, creating more travel options
Weekday service will increase to 48 trips per day. The first southbound train will depart Windsor at 3:56 AM, arriving in Larkspur at 5:20 AM. The first northbound train will depart Larkspur at 5:28 AM, arriving in Windsor at 6:49 AM.
Evening service is also expanding, with the last southbound train departing Windsor at 8:18 PM and the last northbound train departing Larkspur at 10:00 PM.
Weekend service will increase to 24 trips per day, with earlier starts and later evening options to support both leisure and essential travel.
In addition to SMART improvements, Golden Gate Transit Route 101 will run more frequently between San Rafael and San Francisco, with buses every 30 minutes all day and every 15 minutes during weekday peak periods. Service north of Novato will transition to expanded SMART train service.
Together, these changes create faster, more reliable connections, especially for trips to and from San Francisco. Many transfers between SMART and Golden Gate Transit are now timed within a 5–10 minute window, helping reduce wait times and overall travel time.
Additional updates across the region include new and streamlined bus routes, increased frequency on commute services, and improved local connections. Each transit agency will share details about their specific routes and schedules.
There are no changes to Paratransit services.
This coordinated effort reflects a shared commitment to improving transit for the communities we serve, making it easier to choose transit for more of your trips.
