Bicycle and Scooter Policy

SMART Bicycle and Scooter Policy

 

1. General

  • 1.1  The conductor, at their discretion, may revise the handling of bicycles/scooters, including declining transportation, due to train capacity, bicycle/scooter condition, or any other unsafe conditions.
  • 1.2  Each train car has the capacity for up to 12 bicycles.
  • 1.3  Passengers may bring one bicycle or scooter per person, space permitting.
  • 1.4  Bicycles/Scooters must be walked in all pedestrian areas in and around SMART stations, including on platforms. Riding is not allowed on station platforms.
  • 1.5  Only human-powered and sealed dry or gel cell (i.e., lithium, nicad) battery electric assisted bicycles/scooters are allowed. Electric bicycles and scooters are not allowed to be charged while on SMART trains.
  • 1.6  Rideshare bicycles and scooters are not allowed on board SMART trains.
  • 1.7  Gas-powered vehicles are never permitted on board SMART trains.
  • 1.8  Bicycles and scooters must be kept clean and free of excessive dirt or grease. Passengers shall avoid getting chain and sprocket grease on the train or other passengers. No muddy bicycles or scooters shall be permitted onboard at any time.
  • 1.9  In the event of an emergency, bicycles and scooters should be left on the train and the Conductor’s instructions must be followed.
  • 1.10  All stations have free racks for locking bicycles for passengers who do not need to bring their bicycles on the train. Refer to SMART’s website for information about fully enclosed BikeLink electronic lockers also located at each station.  
  • 1.11  If stored on SMART property, bicycles must be parked in racks or lockers. Bicycles parked against poles, light standards, fences, or railings at station facilities will be removed and handled per SMART’s Lost and Found Policy.
  • 1.12  SMART is not responsible for stolen, lost, or damaged bicycles.

 

2. Boarding

  • 2.1  Bicyclists must yield priority seating to seniors and people with disabilities.

  • 2.2  Boarding of bicycles is on a first-come, first-served basis. For safety reasons, aisles must remain clear of bicycles and other items.

  • 2.3  Passengers with a bicycle or scooter must permit other passengers to board and deboard first. Be ready to board or deboard as soon as the train arrives at a station.

  • 2.4  If the designated storage locations are full, and you are not sure where to store your bicycle, follow the instructions of the Conductor on where to secure your bicycle or scooter. Storage areas containing flip seats are available to passengers and bicycles on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • 2.5  Bicycles/Scooters shall not block aisles, walkways, or doors.

 

3.  Bicycles

  • 3.1  Each train car has the capacity for up to 12 bicycles.
  • 3.2  Bicycles wider than 16 inches, excluding handlebars, or longer than 80 inches will only be allowed as space permits.
  • 3.3  SMART will only allow electric bicycles (e-bikes) with fully operable pedals as defined by California Vehicle Codes (CVC) 312.5 and 24016. Motorcycles, motor driven cycles, and motorized bicycles or mopeds are defined as vehicles in the California DMV Motorcycle Handbook and are not permitted on SMART trains.
  • 3.4  Large, bulky attachments which expand bicycle width beyond 16”, such as saddlebags, b­­­askets, backpacks, or briefcases, are allowed but these attachments must be removed when instructed by the Conductor due to space limitations.
  • 3.5  Tandem and three-wheel bicycles are not permitted.
  • 3.6  Detachable or collapsible trailers are not allowed.
  • 3.7  Customers with bicycles must lift and maneuver their own bicycle onboard the train and are responsible for securing their bicycles in the designated locations provided on the train. Bicyclists must use the hanging bicycle hooks or at least two (2) seat-mounted bungee straps provided to secure their bicycles. The kickstand must be up. Do not chain or lock bicycles to train fixtures. When at least two (2) bungee cords are not available for proper securement, bicycles must be attended by the passenger.
  • 3.8  Bicyclists should stay near their bicycles while on the train and should sit in the same car as their bicycle. Please follow the posted instructions for bicycle placement and follow instructions given by the Conductor.
  • 3.9  Folding bicycles may not be placed on seats, block aisles or be stored in the space reserved for passengers’ wheelchairs.
  • 3.10  Folding bicycles that are not on the bicycle hooks must remain folded until the passenger has fully left the train.

 

4. Scooters

  • 4.1  Electric or manually operated scooters are permitted on the SMART train. 

  • 4.2  Folding scooters must be in the folded position prior to boarding and must remain under the control of the owner while on board.

  • 4.3  Folding scooters can accompany a person to a seat if it is small enough to fit between the legs of a seated customer, can be stored under the seat, or placed in the overhead luggage racks provided by SMART. Luggage rack storage is limited to scooters weighing no more than 50 lbs. and those that do not protrude beyond the edge of the rack. 

  • 4.4  Folding scooters may not be placed on seats and must not block aisles.
